Lyrics
When I was a rich man’s daughter,
I learned how to sing and play,
and never never knew what I’d go through,
in the future far away.
I sang for kings and golden rings,
and showers of bouquets.
And all that time in made-up rhyme,
I hid what I would say:
Oh, Let me set my sail for freedom,
wherever I must roam!
And sing for crumbs,
with buckets for drums
and call the sea my home!
When I was sold to the highest bidder,
I learned how to hide my face
and make believe I never did grieve
the darkness of that place:
When I was a monk on a mountain,
I learned how to silently pray,
and in my grief I found relief
in praising each new day:
And now that I’m standing beside you,
Remembering back through the years,
As stories go and tales of woe,
My freedom was worth the tears, I know!
Oh, Let me set my sail for freedom,
wherever I must roam!
And sing for crumbs,
with buckets for drums
and call the sea my home!
